COURSE
EMPHASIS
Throughout the entire course the students are
encouraged to “think” like scientists by
asking questions and solving problems through experimentation. We will take a look
at how scientists use new discoveries and observations to make changes to
existing theories.
First
Trimester:
Physics: Physics is the study of matter and
energy. We will be studying the “how’s”
and “why’s” of moving objects, as well as the transmission of energy via waves.
Second
Trimester:
Chemistry: In chemistry we will learn about the
structures and properties of matter.
We will also learn how one thing can turn into something else by molecular
interactions
or exchanging energy.
Third
Trimester:
Applied
Physical Science:
Concepts that are learned during the first and second trimester
will be applied to concepts such as astronomy, meteorology, and
climatology.

ASSESSMENT
Students will be assessed in the following
ways:
1.
Participation Points are points that students gain through
daily attendance, timely
completion of homework, and on-task behaviors in the classroom. These points will
be given on an all or none basis.
2.
Assignments are given to apply concepts and review
material. I am not a fan of
busy work so if I give an assignment, chances are it is important and should be
completed
on time!! I do NOT give credit for late assignments, no
excuses! Kids will be given
two “Gold Cards” that they may use for an exception to turn an assignment in
late or
as a bathroom and locker pass.
3.
Notebook Points are given at the end of every
unit. These points encourage students
to do their assignments even if they have missed the deadlines to turn things
in. If students
never do their work they will be penalized twice.
4.
Quizzes and Tests will be used to assess your
understanding of the material. There
will
always be a test wrapping up a unit.
Quizzes may or may not be given each unit.
To perform well on quizzes and tests, spend at least 15 minutes to review work
from this class daily!!
5.
Group Projects will be assigned throughout the year to
assess your understanding of
various units. These projects will vary from constructing models to presenting
a research.

A
3-ring binder must be purchased for science use only. Organization of materials in
this binder will be important since this
course will be activity oriented. All
assignments, activities, and notes will be
kept in the binder and organized with
a table of contents
Physical
Science textbook will be used throughout the year
mainly as a
reference and also for review of the concepts
that we cover. Bring your book to class
everyday.
Fines will be submitted if the texts are returned in poor
condition.
A book cover is required!!
A
calculator and metric ruler will also come in
handy during most of this year.

Top 5 Ways to Be Successful and Make Mrs. Hughes Happy J
**On
time means you are in your seat before
the bell rings.
Remember: YOU are responsible for your own learning!
Outside Meetings
I will generally be available before school,
starting at 7:15 in the morning. I am
also
available during my 4th and 7th hour planning periods in
my office which is in room 14.
Miss
class? If
you are absent, check with a friend or check the calendar to see what
you missed then set up a time to talk with Mrs. Hughes about what you need to
make-up
and then turn that in within two days to receive full credit. If you missed a lab or activity,
schedule a time in the morning to make that up with Mrs. Hughes.
Lab
and Activity Make-up: If labs or activities are missed due
to an excused absence you
will have two days to make-up that work.
Lab Make-up is from 7:15-8:00 in the morning.
Make-ups must be arranged in advance.
PLEASE
feel free to stop by anytime with questions, comments, or concerns.
