Principal Bacon's Letter for February 10, 2012
February 10, 2012
Dear Little Hawks,
Greetings from The School That Leads! It is a very busy weekend, as usual, here in Little Hawk country. Many groups in action representing our school this weekend. I am proud of our great students. It is such a joy to watch these young men and women work so hard in their chosen activities.
Did you know? Did you know that City High’s average composite ACT score of 25.1 is the second highest score in Iowa? Did you our school produced the fourth largest number of National Merit Semi-Finalists in Iowa? Did you know our school offers a robust Advanced Placement program? Did your know 93% of City High students describe our school as a highly safe and supportive place to learn (Iowa Youth Survey)? Did you know I could keep going on and on and on…? J
The Little Hawkpublished an amazing edition today. Students enjoy reading the school paper hot off the presses. Check out The Little Hawk Online for the latest stories (http://thelittlehawk.com)
A few dates: There is no school for students and Monday, February 20. It is a professional development day for teachers. The last day of second trimester is February 24. Monday, February 27 is an ICCSD snow make-up day (if no snow days before then, it will be a no school day for students). There is also no school for students on Tuesday, February 24 (end of trimester records day for teachers). The first day of our third trimester is Wednesday, February 29.
Congratulations to our Best Buddies Club. The Valentine’s Dance last weekend was truly spectacular!
Congratulations to City High's Large Group Speech team that performed at the state contest last Saturday at Cedar Rapids Washington. Five acting groups received all Division 1 ratings and are eligible for All State awards to be announced soon. These groups include the men's musical theatre entry of "Forever Plaid," the ensemble scenes of "Rosie in the Shadow of the Melrose" and "Please Have a Seat," the One Act play "Fifteen Minute Hamlet," and Emma Wortman's solo mime titled "Hold On!" Great job to all the participants in Large Group Speech!
We enjoyed tremendous, beautiful performances from Choir and Orchestra this week. Tomorrow, our Jazz Bands turn our cafeteria into a jazz club for the annual Jazz Showcase. Show times are 5:30 and 8:00. Treat yourself to this wonderful event.
Congratulations to City High School’s Finalists for the 2012 National Merit Scholarship Competition: Sean Hoelscher, Rachel Fehr, Abigail Romano, Brittany Oltmanns, and Elizabeth Larsen. This is an extremely prestigious honor.
Attention Seniors and Families: The DPO Scholarship is available for Seniors interested in majoring in education in college. The scholarship will be in the $1,000-$1,500 range. Applications are available in the guidance office. They are due by March 1. I strongly encourage all our future teachers to apply!
From our PSTO (Parent, Student, Teacher Organization): PSTO invites parents and students to attend a forum in the Commons at 7 pm on Monday, Feb. 13, on “Teachable Moments.” The discussion will be presented by a teen health educator from United Action for Youth. The forum will focus on effective communication strategies for talking with teens about sex, in order to promote the dissemination of accurate information and to encourage healthy choices.
Have a wonderful weekend.
It's great to be a City High Little Hawk!
Sincerely,
John Bacon
Principal
