Literary Element - Theme

A theme in a story is the central, unifying message. It brings the plot, setting, and characterization together in a meaningful whole. It is often not stated directly by the author but is expressed by what happens to the characters and how events help them change and grow. In any story there can be many themes, as well as individual interpretations of a theme.
