Students who have a language other than or in addition to English in her or his background (Language Minority Students) register for the ICCSD at the English Language Intake and Assessment Center (ELIAC). At the center, the student's English proficiency is assessed, the student is registered for the Iowa City Schools, and the family receives information about educational programming and community resources.

To make an appointment:

  1. Call 319-688-1320.
  2. If a family goes directly to a neighborhood school, the first document they will complete when registering will be the Home Language Survey (HLS). If a language other than English is spoken in the home, it will be documented on the HLS, and the school registrant will make an appointment for the incoming family to go to the ELIAC to continue registration.

When families come to their appointment, they should bring the following:

The appointment lasts about 40 minutes, or a little longer. Parents remain at the Center during the process. At the end of the process, the ELIAC Assistant gives parents the forms they need in order to go to their home school to complete registration. If the student is a secondary student, the assistant makes an appointment for the family with the appropriate counselor at either West High School or Northwest Junior High School, so they can register for classes.
