World Languages

Overview

The World Language Program of the Iowa City Community School District provides a sequence of study for students to acquire listening, speaking, reading, writing and thinking skills in French, German, or Spanish; for students to gain an appreciation of the countries, their people, literature and fine arts; for students to learn to study independently; to enable students to continue advanced world language study in college and/or work in an international environment; and to help students appreciate and better understand English and the United States through the study of another language and culture. The World Language Program begins in grade seven and continues through junior high and high school.

World language courses are offered as electives for junior high students. Instruction in French, German and Spanish are offered every-other-day in grade seven and every day in grade eight. The two years combined are equivalent to the Level I courses offered at the high schools. The pace of the two-year junior high program allows more time for cultural exploration and for learning to learn a language. Students who complete this program are eligible to enroll in a Level II course in grade nine and may continue through Level V in grade twelve.

High school world language courses are elective and each level is open to all students in grades nine through twelve. Levels I through V are available in French, German, and Spanish. Students in upper level world language courses have opportunities to receive college credit for world language study. There are also many opportunities for travel and study abroad that are facilitated through participation in the World Language Program.
