Overview

Health and Personal Development lessons are taught at the elementary and secondary levels in the Iowa City Community Schools.

Kindergarten through 6th grade lessons are taught by either the classroom teacher or the specials teacher, as part of Guidance, Social Studies and PE lessons. We use an award-winning curriculum, the Michigan Model, for our elementary health lessons. Lessons include problem-solving, relationship-building and specific health practices like keeping hands clean, resting, as well as good nutrition and dental health.

As mandated by the state, we teach lessons pertaining to HIV and AIDS. Substance abuse prevention and safety are taught in all elementary grades. Additionally, district teachers added lessons in each grade about sexuality and family life to ensure that students have accurate and age-appropriate information. For more information about the Michigan Model curriculum please check the website: www.emc.cmich.edu.

At the secondary schools, too, students attend age-appropriate health and development classes: one trimester of 7th and 8th Personal Development classes and one trimester of 9th grade Health classes. These classes cover the important topics of relationships, communication, sexuality, drug and alcohol abuse prevention, as well as wellness habits and nutrition. Lessons about mental health, HIV and AIDS add to the students’ growing knowledge and skills base. Health and Personal Development teachers offer secondary students a chance to practice research skills about health topics that interest them.
