Kate Wickham General Music Program |
The purpose of General Music at Kate Wickham School is to expose children to a variety of musical experiences. Students sing, dance, play instruments, listen to music and build a foundation for music literacy.
Two well-known philosophies for teaching music are included in the Wickham Music Curriculum, Orff and Kodaly. Carl Orff was a German composer who believed that children should be taught in an environment that will allow them to create their own music. Orff invented an orchestra of pitched percussion instruments so that children are able to accompany themselves with ease. Kodaly, a Hungarian composer, developed a method for music literacy.
Students at Kate Wickham are also exposed to music from different cultures. The Iowa City School District has numerous multicultural kits that travel from school to school. Students are able to use authentic instruments from Africa, China, Japan, Australia, The Caribbean, Hawaii, and Indonesia. Students play dulcimers from the Appalachian Mountain region of the United States and authentic Native American drums.
Team Five teachers (music, art, physical education, media and counseling) work together to encourage students to make choices that will lead to a healthy and well-balanced life.
