Band instruction begins in the 5th grade at Wickham Elementary School and any student who is interested in playing an instrument may participate.Lessons are offered on flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, horn, trombone, euphonium, tuba and percussion. During the first two weeks of the school year, 5th graders try to hold and produce a sound on all the instruments. District instrumental music staff help the students decide which instrument is best suited for them by assessing the physical characteristics of each student relative to the instrument. Group lessons begin in the middle of September. The weekly lesson period is 15-20 minutes in length in small groups of like instruments. |
In November, all beginning band students are invited to participate in the after school band program which meets one afternoon each week from 3:30-4:30 PM at Northwest Junior High School. Wickham musicians join students from three other elementary schools to work on music that will be presented in two evening concerts each year. This gives the students the opportunity to experience playing in a band and to work on performance music that correlates with their lesson instruction curriculum.
Lessons and band continue with a similar format in 6th grade. An optional solo recital is presented each year for students desiring this experience.
