West High’s Newspaper Receives International Recognition
West High’s newspaper, the West Side Story, received the George H. Gallup award for the 2008-2009 year for the fourth year in a row. The award is the highest honor from Quill and Scroll, the international journalism honor society. Quill and Scroll gives the award due to excellence in coverage, content, business practices, design and editorial leadership.
The recommendation of several Quill and Scroll judges is needed before a paper qualifies for the Gallup. According to the Quill and Scroll judges’ comments to the West Side Story, “The George H. Gallup Award is a distinguished and rare honor. The Gallup indicates not just an excellent newspaper, but also a pattern of sustained superior achievement. Papers which have been written about in other papers; papers which have received recognition from their community; papers which have uncovered extraordinary stories; papers which in every way, demonstrate the highest possible standard of scholastic journalism are honored with a Gallup.”
Jenna Broghamer (2009), a freshman at Central College, was editor-in-chief of the West Side Story. Sara Whittaker is the publication’s adviser. |

Congratulations to the 19 West High School Semifinalists named
in the 2010 National Merit Scholarship competition
Semifinalists in the 55th annual National Merit Scholarship Program were announced by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC). These academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 8,200 Merit Scholarship awards, worth $36 million, that will be offered next spring. To be considered for a Merit Scholarship award, Semifinalists must fulfill several requirements and advance to the Finalist level of the competition.
NMSC, a not-for-profit organization that operates without assistance, was established in 1955 specifically to conduct the annual National Merit Program. More than 1.5 million juniors in over 22,000 U.S. high schools entered the 2010 Merit Program by taking the 2008 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT), which served as an initial screen of program entrants. The nationwide pool of Semifinalists, which represents less than one per cent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest scoring entrants in each state. The number of Semifinalists in a state is proportional to the state's percentage of the national total of graduating seniors.
To become a Finalist, a Semifinalist must have an academic record of very high performance, be endorsed and recommended by the school principal, and earn SAT scores that confirm the student's earlier qualifying test performance. The Semifinalist and his/her counselor must submit a detailed application, which includes the student's self-descriptive essay and information about the Semifinalist's participation and leadership in school and community activities.
Approximately 15,000 of the Semifinalists are expected to advance to the Finalist level and it is from this group that all National Merit Scholarship winners will be chosen. Merit designees are selected on the basis of their skills, accomplishments, and potential for success in rigorous college studies, without regard to gender, race, ethnic origin, or religious preference.
The following 19 West High seniors have been designated as Semifinalists:

West High School Recognized as One of the Top High Schools in the Nation
Newsweek magazine recently published its list of the top 1,500 high schools in the country and ranked West High School 846th in the listing. The high schools were ranked according to a ratio determined by taking the number of Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate and/or Cambridge tests taken by all students at the school in 2008 divided by the number of graduating seniors. According to Newsweek, the schools in the listing are in the top 6 percent of public schools measured by this method. Only six high schools in Iowa made the list, including Kennedy High (Cedar Rapids), Washington High (Cedar Rapids) and Ames High School, Mid-Praire (Wellman) and Valley High (West Des Moines).
