-Students can be self-referred if they are concerned about their own use or the use of a freind or family member
-Parents, staff, teachers, and administrators may refer students if they have concerns about substance abuse

How to Make a Referral

-Speak directly to Amy via phone at 688-1090 ext. 5096 or in person in room 23
-Send an email to Amy at araulerson@meccaia.com

Confidentiality
Federal law mandates that substance abuse counseling sessions are confidential, even for minors, unless there is written consent to release this information. The only exception to this confidentiality would be in the event that a student is expressing intent to harm him/herself or someone else. As a mandatory reporter, Amy must break confidentiality to protect the client and/or others. All students are encouraged to sign a release form during initual meetings to strengthen their support system.

PREVENTION SERVICES

Presentations
The MECCA Counselor is available for presentations in the classroom or at parent or teacher meetings on a variety of topics. Common topics include:
-Binge Drinking
-Myths & Facts about Substance Use
-The Effects of Drugs on the Brain
-Physical & Psychological Drug/Alcohol Dependence
-The Pros & Cons of Substance Use: Low Risk versus High Risk Choices

Other Prevention Activities
Amy is conducting focus groups with students to gather information about their beliefs, attitudes, and experiences surrounding alcohol and drug use at West High. The information gathered from the focus groups, combined with the results from the Iowa Youth Survey will help guide interventions and school campaigns that would be appropriate to our West High culture.

Amy is also working to have student directed and produced Public Service Announcemnts advertising substance abuse prevention messages. These short videos will be aired at the school and on local cable stations. Poster campaigns are also designed for Alcohol Awareness Month in April, Homecoming, Prom, and Graduation.
