AP EXAM SCHEDULE

What to Bring on Exam Day

You are required to arrive no later than 20 minutes prior to your exam: 7:40 am for the morning administration and 11:40 am for the afternoon administration. Students may not be dismissed until an exam has officially ended; do not ask to leave early if you finish before the end of the exam. If you play a sport or have a job, it is testyour responsibility to inform your coach or employer of your AP Exam obligation, and arrangements should be made accordingly.

Get a good night’s rest before your exam, and eat a nutritious breakfast. You are allowed to bring a snack and beverage for your 10-minute break. However, food and drink are prohibited in the exam room. It is advisable to bring a sweater, in case the room temperature is below your comfort level.

You are required to abide by the policies of both the College Board and West High School during the exam period. Any misconduct will be reported and could jeopardize your AP Exam score. If you decide not to take an exam, please inform Mr. de Leon as soon as possible prior to the test administration.

If you have any additional questions or concerns, feel free to contact Mr. de Leon. Good luck!

3rd Period

5th Period
All seniors taking AP exams report to session

ALL 10-12 grade students registered for AP Tests MUST attend! Report to the Little Theater PROMPTLY when called.

Students in school are expected to attend a preadministration session. If you cannot attend during the time scheduled for your class come to one of the other sessions that morning.

What is an AP Preadministration Session?

An AP Preadministration session is a gathering of all students who will be taking AP tests for the purpose of completing mandatory paperwork in advance of the testing in May.

Why have an AP Preadministration Session?

Having an AP Preadministration Session reduces the time needed for each test by 30-45 minutes. This is especially important for students who are taking 2 AP tests on the same day and students who have after-school commitments on AP test days.

Is an AP Preadministration Session Really Necessary?

YES!! Due to the large number of students taking AP tests at West, each test will have some students who are taking their first AP test of the two-week period. If a preadministration session is not held, students who have already completed the necessary information during an earlier AP test have to wait while the first-time test takers complete all of the biographical data needed by The College Board. Besides wasting time, this heightens the anxiety for students waiting to start the test.

How long will the AP Preadministration Session Take?

The length of the AP Preadministration Session is totally dependent on the students. If they report promptly and listen and follow instructions with a minimum of disruption the session will take no more than 30 minutes.

What should students bring to the AP Preadministration Session?

Each student should bring a sharpened #2 pencil. Bring a book, etc. to write on. Students who have taken AP exams in prior years should try to find and bring their AP Grade Report forms so they can use the same identifying information they used in the past.

If students want to use social security number for identification purposes (WHICH IS OPTIONAL) they should be sure they know the correct number.

What if I'm absent and miss the AP Preadministration Session?

Attending an AP Preadministration session is mandatory before taking an exam. If you miss the session in early April, you will be contacted about scheduling another session. However, if you are in school on the day of the preadministration session you are expected to attend one of the scheduled sessions!

What is AP?

Why Participate in AP?

AP and the Cost of College

The Advanced Placement program was designed for high school students, offering the opportunity to take college-level courses taught by secondary teachers. College and university professors and high school teachers develop the course materials. Students are able to demonstrate the concepts and skills mastered through academic specific tests administered in May of each year. The tests are scored from 1-5, with the 5 being the highest numerical grade. Receiving high scores can result in college/university credit, advanced placement, or both.

Putting students' subject knowledge to the test

For most students, taking the AP Exam in May serves as the natural culmination of their AP course experience. Schools wishing to provide this experience to their students should be aware of the different AP Exams available, the responsibilities associated with administering exams, and the exam development processes that ensure college-level learning is being assessed.

Fast facts about AP Exams

  • In 2008, 2.7 million exams were taken by nearly 1.6 million students at over 17,000 high schools.

  • The AP Program offers 37 courses and exams.

  • The majority of U.S. high schools currently participate in the AP Program.

  • Except for the three Studio Art exams, which are portfolio assessments, AP Exams contain multiple-choice questions and a free-response section.

  • Because the College Board is committed to providing access to AP Exams to all students—including homeschooled students and students whose schools do not offer AP—students do not have to take an AP course before taking an AP Exam.

  • The AP Exam fee is $87. The College Board provides a $30 ($22 + West's rebate) fee reduction for qualifying low-income students. Most states use federal and/or state funds to cover part or all of the remaining exam fee for low-income students.

  • More than 90 percent of four-year U.S. colleges and universities grant credit or placement for qualifying AP Exam grades.

Calendar of Events

Although a lot of attention is given to the AP Exam, the AP experience really begins a whole year before then. Here are some checkpoints based on a traditional school year:

  • January: Discuss your plans and review your work with your AP teacher and/or your counselor.

  • Last week of March: Deadline for West High to submit test order.

  • First two weeks in May: Exam weeks.

  • June: Deadline for receipt of letters asking for a change in reporting grades to colleges.

  • July: AP Grade Reports released to the college(s) students designated, and sent to home address and to West High School. Grades by phone available for current year's administration.

  • September: Scholar Award notifications sent to West High School and students.
