Shimek Elementary is located at 1400 Grissel Place, Iowa City, in a quiet eastside neighborhood surrounded by woods and native prairie. Featuring contemporary architecture set in a beautifully landscaped open area, the school is named after a native Iowan, Bohumil Shimek. who made important contributions as a geologist, botanist, zoologist, educator, engineer, conservationist, patriot and citizen. Shimek Elementary opened in the fall of 1970 and consists of EC/SE (Early Childhood/Special Education) and grades K-6 students. Students attend South East Junior High and City High.
