COURSE TITLE: Supported Learning GRADE LEVEL: 7, 8
PREREQUISITE: Staffing
LENGTH: As needed

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Students qualify for this course through a prescribed staffing procedure. The focus of the program is on the learning of strategies and remediation of deficit skill areas with particular emphasis on improving reading, math, language arts, organization abilities and classroom behaviors. An Individual Education Plan will be developed for each student annually. Attention is also given to supplementing regular class instruction in the following ways:
Consultation with general education teachers
Preparation for tests, quizzes and projects
Provide direct assistance in the general education classroom
Providing other assistance as requested

Organizational skills Supplement Global Studies and science

STUDENTS ARE EXPECTED TO:
Learn to use appropriate strategies
Improve in deficit skill areas

When the above are achieved, this would lead to the student becoming an independent worker and thus be staffed out of learning support.





COURSE TITLE:
Practical Strategies GRADE LEVEL: 7, 8

COURSE DESCRIPTION: The focus of the program is in teaching courses geared to ability levels in the areas of reading, writing and math. Social studies, health, science, life skills and math courses are taught emphasizing practical skills applicable to real life situations. Organizational study skills and social behavioral skills are emphasized. Career awareness and pre-vocational skills are also included in the program.

Attention is also given to supplementing regular class instruction by reading tests and assisting with class work. Close contact is maintained with both parents and teachers of the students enrolled within the program. Behavior modification programs are developed according to individual student needs.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: The emphasis is on increasing student awareness and understanding of their relationship to the rest of the world.

COURSE TITLE:
Practical Strategies American Studies GRADE LEVEL: 8

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This American Studies course provides an alternative curriculum that parallels the required eighth grade American Studies I course. The content is organized by chronological and thematic units. Materials utilized will include Joy Hakim's text series, A History of the U.S., and American's Story by Vivian Bernstein, supplemented with audio visuals, computer software, current events, and learning activities and projects that will require active student participation.


STUDENTS ARE EXPECTED TO:
Attend class daily.
Participate in daily class discussions and activities.
Complete daily class assignments and projects.
Participate in course assessment activities.

COURSE TITLE:

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This is an individualized Language Arts program that supports development of skills in the areas of written language, reading, spelling and communication.

COURSE TITLE:
Functional Math Strategies GRADE LEVEL: 7,8

COURSE DESCRIPTION: An alternative math course for students with special math programming needs who do not have the prerequisite skills or learning styles and behaviors to successfully participate in Math 7A, Math 7, or Math 8 courses. The primary focus of this course involves students in relating math skills and concepts in all unit areas to a variety of real-life applications and experiences.

COURSE TITLE: Functional Strategies GRADE LEVEL: 7, 8
PREREQUISITE: Special Ed staffing

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Emphasis is placed on the instruction of activity-based skills that will benefit the student now and in the future in all environments (school, home and community). This involves instruction at an individual level directed towards functional academic skills, independent living activities, and gaining and maintaining vocational and social skills. Focus is on simple problem solving and the generalization of skills into everyday life situations/settings.

AREAS OF STUDY: (taught to individual functioning level)
Domestic Domain--Food preparation, personal care and housekeeping activities.
Vocational Domain--Occupational training, work related skills and job-seeking skills.
Community Domain--Eating out, shopping, travel and using public services.
Recreation/Leisure Domain--School, home and community resources and activities.
Functional Academics--Emphasizes the use of survival reading, money usage, time telling and writing skills within the domain areas listed above.
Behavioral/Social--Emphasizes situationally appropriate behaviors and social skills for interaction with both handicapped and non-handicapped peers and community members.
Special Services--Speech/language, adaptive physical education, physical therapy, occupational therapy services as needed.

COURSE TITLE:

COURSE DESCRIPTION: The focus of the classroom for students with autism is on increasing independence across present and anticipated settings: school, home, the community and the work place. The classroom operates within a framework of cognitive behaviors in which instruction is individualized to meet each student's needs. Language and communication skills are emphasized throughout.

COURSE TITLE:
Adaptive Music GRADE LEVEL: 7,8
PREREQUISITE: Special Education Staffing
LENGTH: Full year

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Students meet every other day. Experiences include working with rhythm instruments, moving, singing, listening, and discussing musical pieces. Students also are introduced to, improve, or maintain conceptual music skill areas such as rhythm, dynamics, form, tone color, and tempo. Special emphasis is placed on meeting the student's individual needs for success, including adaptive techniques for playing instruments and the use of visuals through which non-verbal students participate in singing activities. A guitar, keyboard, or handbell unit is held each trimester. Students in this class have also participated in the Eulenspiegel Puppet Festival with a production in the spring trimester. Students attend this class with support from their classroom associates and peer volunteers.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is designed to adapt to the students' needs. The students will be provided the knowledge and concepts as they relate to a wide variety of activities. A major goal of this course is to help develop the students' gross and fine motor coordination through exposure to individual and team activities.

COURSE TITLE:
Life Skills

COURSE DESCRIPTION: The focus of this tightly structured classroom for students with behavior disabilities is to provide students with behavior strategies which will aid them in use of internal controls to demonstrate appropriate behaviors within various settings and with a variety of individuals. Daily home-school communication is provided to allow for continuity regarding newly learned strategies.

Group Classes
Social Studies (current events and career ed.)
Science (stress management, health, drug awareness, self-esteem, human sexuality)

Behavior Strategies (social skills, goal settings, problem-solving, peer relationships, rational emotive therapy)

COURSE TITLE: Intensive Behavior Intervention (IBI)
GRADE LEVEL: 7, 8

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Intensive Behavior Intervention is individualized to students needs; students have interventions that are used on a one-to-one basis and for a short amount of time.  The goal of the classroom is to produce measurable outcomes that reduce behaviors which interfere with student development, use of language, and appropriate social interactions. The classroom will expand a severely restricted range of interests and increase students’ ability to participate in other activities and environments.

AREAS OF STUDY: (taught at an individual functioning level)
Communication Skills - Accentuates student’s language abilities, and teaching the use of assistive communication.

Daily Living Skills - Personal Hygiene and household cleaning

Pre Vocational Skills - Work related skills, and vocational training
Community Skills – Safety, using public services, and accessing local business
Recreation/Leisure Skills- broadening interests, turn-taking, and socialization
Functional Academics - On-task work skills, fundamental academics in reading, math, and language arts.
Behavioral/Social - Emphasizes social skills and appropriate behaviors in multiple settings with peers.
Special Services - Speech/language, adaptive physical education, physical therapy, occupational therapy services as needed.
