COURSE TITLE: Global Studies
PREREQUISITE: None
LENGTH: Full year

COURSE DESCRIPTION: The purpose of seventh grade Global Studies is to encourage the development of students' global perspectives. Emphasis is on student involvement in increasing their awareness and understanding of our growing ties to the rest of the world. The concept-focused curriculum will give each student an opportunity to examine various cultures and geographic characteristics of selected world areas. Inquiry lessons, role playing simulation activities and skill exercises such as writing, reading map skills, and listening are used to achieve the objectives of each unit.

COURSE TITLE: American Studies I
PREREQUISITE: None
LENGTH: Full year

COURSE DESCRIPTION: American Studies I is the first part of a two-year survey of American history. The content outline begins in the 1600's with the establishment of Colonial America and progresses through Post-Civil War westward expansion. The course utilizes a combination of chronological and thematic organization. A History of US, written by Joy Hakim, is the current text supplied in the classroom, along with numerous other supplemental materials such as film, additional readings, and teacher-prepared materials, the students become aware of historical events, people and conditions which impact our lives today. Students are expected to increase their content knowledge of history plus improve their skills in the areas of reading, analysis, writing, listening, comprehension and technology.

STUDENTS ARE EXPECTED TO:
Read and analyze the text and other assigned written and visual materials
Meet minimum requirements on written homework assignments
Participate in class activities and complete assignments
Attend class daily
Perform satisfactorily on tests and quizzes
Continue development of study skills including reading for a variety of purposes, taking notes in class, practice of study skills, notebooks, etc.



COURSE TITLE: Seminar GRADE LEVEL: 8
LENGTH: Year (Classes meet every other day)

PREREQUISITE: Eligible students are those who have received a Core Total score of 95th percentile or above on his/her most recent ITBS or a comparable nationally normed achievement. Students will be notified by letter of their eligibility for this elective.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Seminar is an elective course designed for gifted and talented students who wish to challenge their own potential within a small group. Students will develop individual skills in creative thinking, logic and problem solving. Students will also be provided with opportunities for career awareness and individual creative projects based on student interests and abilities.

COURSE TITLE: World Events GRADE LEVEL: 8
PREREQUISITE: None
LENGTH: Trimester

COURSE DESCRIPTION: World Events is a subject area that is developed as events take place. Whether those events occur in the students' community, or across the ocean, the course is designed to evaluate their significance. Being a democratic course in nature, the students play a major part in choosing which events to study. The role of the teacher is to guide them through the study, often as the event takes place. The teacher may have to rely upon other areas of social science study, such as history and global studies, to help students fully comprehend the current significance of the events they have chosen for study.
