BELIEF STATEMENT
The SEJHS School Improvement Plan will support and nurture intellectual, social and emotional development among all members of the SE community; provide a safe, structured environment that encourages mutual respect for self, others and property; and increase communication among all members of the SE community and the community at large.


SOUTH EAST JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL MISSION STATEMENT
The mission of the South East community is to provide an education that encourages each adolescent to advance abilities, enhance self-esteem, develop responsibility and mutual respect in a safe, structured environment which promotes academic and social development.

2008-09 and 2009-10 SEJHS Comprehensive School Improvement Plan Goals

 General Goal: Math: There will be fewer students below proficient in their ITBS Math Total Score

 Annual Goal: Math: The SE students will increase by 25% their Division of Decimal’s Bldg %C score on the Fall, 2009 ITBS (2008 Bldg %C: 7th: 39, 8th = 37)

 General Goal: Literacy:

        #1: There will be fewer General Education students who are below proficient in their ITBS Reading Comprehension score.

        #2: There will be fewer Special Education students who are below proficient in their ITBS Reading Comprehension score.

 Annual Goal: Literacy: At least 80% of the 2009-10 8th grader students will score in the middle and high bands on the inference and interpretation ITBS subtests.

 General Goal: Writing: Students will maintain their proficient performance in writing.

 Annual Goal: Language Arts:

        Interim Goal for 08-09 Tri 3: AT least 95% of the students will complete a diagnostic test over essential grammar and mechanics concepts and skills. At least 95% of students will complete a focused analysis and reflection on their skills that will focus on improvement and learning goals for the coming year.  

 09-10 Annual Goal:

                Diagnostic and Reflection: At least 95% of the students will complete a diagnostic test over ten essential grammar and mechanics concepts and skills. In addition, at least 95% of students will complete a focused analysis and reflection on their skills that will focus on improvement and learning goals for the coming year.

                Mid-year Performance Goal: 80% of the students will score at 80& or better on a mid-year assessment of this fairly modest goal. If that goal isn’t met, then this will become an area for intensive differentiated instruction to meet the goal by the end of the year. (If that goal is met, then 10 new essential skills will be introduced for the second half of the year and the process of diagnostic/reflection and assessment will start over.

 General Goal: Science: Students will maintain their proficient performance in Science.

 Annual Goal: Science: 75% of students taking the ITBS will be proficient in Science categories during the 2008-09 testing period.

Annual Goal: Social Studies: Reduce the percentage of 7th graders scoring in the low percentage range on the geography portion of ITBS for 2009 testing from 32% to 25% or lower.

School Climate Goals as measured by the Iowa Youth Survey (each statement sets a goal for proposed increase in positive (agree and strongly agree) responses in comparing the baseline 2008-09 data to the future 2009-10 data on seven specific data points); action plans were developed to address all 7 points:

1.   There is at least one adult at school whom I could go to for help with a problem: Increase from 83% to 90%

2.   I care about my school: Increase from 70% to 76%

3.   My teachers are available to meet with me one-on-one: Increase from 76% to 82%

4.   Students treat each other with respect: Increase from 44% to 50%

5.   School lets parents know when I’m doing a good job: Increase from 61% to 72%

6.   I feel safe at school: Increase from 78% to 80%

7.   My teachers notice when I’m doing a good job: Increase from 71% to 77%
