COURSE TITLE: Literacy 7
PREREQUISITE: none
LENGTH: Year long


COURSE DESCRIPTION: The goal of this course is to help students learn strategies to become engaged, fluent, and competent readers of a variety of texts encountered in their personal and academic lives.  Overtime students will learn about and practice using cognitive strategies to help them learn from a variety of increasing complex reading material.


STUDENTS ARE EXPECTED TO:
Bring required materials to class
Work independently
Participate in class discussions and activities
Follow the "Four for All" school rules


COURSE TITLE: Language Arts 8
PREREQUISITE: None
LENGTH: Full year

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Language Arts 8 supports growth in students' literacy by integrating activities in reading, writing, speaking, listening, visual expression and viewing. The class will often be in a "workshop" mode with time to read self-selected books and write for a variety of audiences and purposes. Integrated units, including directed reading selections and writing assignments are also part of the curriculum. The Diary of Anne Frank and "Flowers for Algernon" are two pieces of literature usually read by eighth graders during these units.

Complete assigned work on time

COURSE TITLE: Language Arts 7
PREREQUISITE: None
LENGTH: Full year

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Language Arts 7 supports growth in students' literacy by integrating activities in reading, writing, speaking, listening, visual expression, and viewing. Activities are both teacher directed and student selected, often including a workshop setting for reading and writing. A Language Arts/Global Studies block allows teachers to team teach. In addition, many of the literature selections in Language Arts 7 come from the areas of the world studied in Global Studies.

STUDENTS ARE EXPECTED TO:
Bring required materials to class
Keep a reading and writing log
Actively participate in whole class, small group, and individual literacy experiences
Complete assigned work on time
Follow the "Four for All" school rules


COURSE TITLE: Drama
PREREQUISITE: None
LENGTH: One trimester

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Students participate in a variety of performance-oriented activities. Assignments in the form of informal performance and writing activities help provide an understanding of drama and the theater. Performances vary according to the desires of the individual class.

AREAS OF STUDY:
Pantomime, Characterization, Oral interpretation,
Improvisation, Play production

STUDENTS ARE EXPECTED TO:
Participate in all class activities
Memorize a part for performance
Keep a folder specifically for drama
Cooperate with classmates in production and performance
Complete written assignments
Take responsibility for using in-class work time efficiently
Attend a production outside of school


COURSE TITLE: Writing
PREREQUISITE: None
LENGTH: One trimester

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Students are encouraged to pursue individual interests in writing in any and all forms. In terms of assignments, teacher suggestions are given, but for the most part, students generate their writing out of their own areas of interest.

The process of creating effective writing

COURSE TITLE: Media Workshop
PREREQUISITE: None
LENGTH: One tri

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Media Workshop offers students an opportunity to study various aspects of media: advertising, radio, TV, video and print, with an emphasis on oral and written communication skills. Students then apply their knowledge in a workshop setting to create group projects in the various media.

COURSE TITLE: Exploring Books
PREREQUISITE: Reading 7
LENGTH: One tri*
*This course may be taken more than once, with permission of the instructor.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is designed for students who like to read and who want time set aside in a busy day for reading. More than half the class time will be spent reading books which students have chosen to read. Students will be asked to read 150 pages per week and respond in writing and discussion to the books they are reading. Each student will do an oral presentation about a book/author of his/her choice. Students will have opportunities to discover new titles and old favorites in the worlds of young adult, adult, and classical fiction and non-fiction. Benefits include increasing fluency, comprehension, vocabulary, and critical thinking skills, as well as having time to read and use the library during the school day.

COURSE TITLE: Reading Strategies
PREREQUISITE: by invitation
LENGTH: year long

COURSE DESCRIPTION: The goal is to help students become engaged, fluent, and competent readers of texts that they encounter in their personal and academic lives. Students will practice using different thinking strategies to help them comprehend different kinds of reading materials and will learn how to focus their attention, deal with distractions, and organize their time in order to become more effective learners.
AREAS OF STUDY: Emphasis will be given to applying the following reading skills and strategies to a variety of texts, both fiction and nonfiction: predicting, visualizing, connecting, questioning, clarifying, evaluating, inferring, and summarizing.
STUDENT EXPECTATIONS:
All South East Students are expected to follow the 4 for All code of behavior.
