COURSE TITLE: Typing/Keyboarding
PREREQUISITE: None
LENGTH: One tri

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is required for all 7th graders. In the first half of the trimester, students learn basic fundamentals of alphabetic and numeric keyboarding. Emphasis is placed on developing the touch method of keyboarding and developing speed. The second half concentrates on formatting skills. Students will be able to format announcements, tables, personal notes, letters and reports. Equipment: MacIntosh computers. Software: Microsoft Word.

AREAS OF STUDY:
Students will learn to find the keys on the keyboard by touch, without looking. Carefully measured key introductions and daily practice ensures that all students can type by touch at the course end.
Centering items both vertically and horizontally and typing material in columns (tabulations) will be included.
Accuracy and speed will be emphasized so that the student(s) will be proficient enough to continue to use good typing techniques throughout his/her school years.
Various communication typing skills (letters, reports, etc.) will be included along with composition on the computer.

COURSE TITLE: Leadership
PREREQUISITE: None
LENGTH: One tri*
* This course may be taken more than once with permission of instructor.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: A student interested in learning leadership skills and practicing those skills should take this elective. The class will meet every day for one trimester and is open to any student. Leadership Seminar is a required course for the president and vice-president of the South East Student Council, and students must take this course if they want to be involved in the planning of school activities by working on committees. Along with the regular course content, students in this class will be responsible for participating in committees that will plan parties, special assemblies, and community service projects.

COURSE TITLE: Consumer Math
PREREQUISITE: None
LENGTH: One trimester

COURSE DESCRIPTION: The course is intended to acquaint students with consumer problems and focus on the basic skills necessary to function in everyday life situations. The course will teach students how to use math to solve money related problems, focusing on present and future needs of the student.

COURSE TITLE: Computer Applications
GRADE LEVEL: 8
CATEGORY: Elective
PREREQUISITE: Keyboarding
LENGTH: Trimester


COURSE DESCRIPTION: This is an advanced course for students with good keyboarding skills who want to learn and work more with the computers and a variety of software. It is a course for those who will use personal computers for their academic and personal needs. It is also an excellent course for those who want to develop marketable employment skills. The software to be used includes Microsoft Word for word processing, Excel for spreadsheets & databases, Power Point for presentations and slides, Microsoft Publisher for brochures and pamphlets, Microsoft Front Page for designing web pages, and Internet Explorer for Internet and email access.

AREAS OF STUDY: Students will develop the ten-key number pad skills to facilitate fast number entry by touch; create databases for manipulation and meaningful use; and complete several reports and forms including a class database; create spreadsheets and charts and graphs from their spreadsheets; present a PowerPoint with scanned photos of his or her family; develop a web site with information about his or her life with photos, descriptions, buttons, links, and a home page; and prepare a brochure for an imaginary company.

STUDENT EXPECTATIONS:
All South East Students are expected to follow the 4 for All code of behavior.
Bring a writing implement,

Be responsible for the proper handling and care of all equipment and furniture in the room.
Complete all assigned projects promptly and carefully.
