About South East

South East is a seventh and eighth grade junior high school located in the southeast part of Iowa City, Iowa and serves the eastern part of the school district as divided approximately by the Iowa River.

South East is committed to providing a curricular program which prepares students to function in an ever-changing environment. The curriculum is organized to provide a variety of choices, as well as to develop basic skills within a comprehensive program.

South East opened in 1959, and in 1981 a building addition was completed which included a larger, improved library, several new classrooms, guidance offices, an elevator and other accommodations to make the building handicapped accessible. In addition to the administrative offices and classrooms, the original part of the building contains two computer labs, science labs, a large gym with adjoining shower rooms, band and music rooms, and an up-to-date industrial technology facility. A second addition was opened during the 1994-95 school year which added seven more classrooms and expanded physical education and music facilities. Click here to see floor plans of the building. During the 20070-8 school year another addition was begun which added a second full-size gym, a new wrestling room, additional storage space and four classrooms.

An eight-period day allows us to deliver a wide range of course offerings. The design of the curriculum also provides for the needs of students performing at various ability levels. In the seventh grade, there is teaming between the social studies and language arts teachers.

South East is "next door" to the Mercer Aquatic Center. Frequent use is made of this facility by the Physical Education Department and co-ed swim team. There are three computer labs (one of these is a mobile lab) used for keyboard instruction, individualized instruction, and as a classroom for all curricular areas.

A comprehensive student activity program is also available at South East. Students participate in interscholastic and intramural sports programs. Jazz Band, Swing Choir, Science Club, MathCounts, Chess Club, and the Knowledge Master Open are some of the other activities in which students participate. South East also has an active student government. Students are also supported through a variety of special education programs.
