COURSE DESCRIPTION: Students participate in a variety of performance-oriented
activities. Assignments in the form of informal performance and writing
activities help provide an understanding of drama and the theater. Performances
vary according to the desires of the individual class.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is designed primarily for the 8th grade
student who was not enrolled in a 7th grade choral program and those who
were enrolled but opt out of the more intense 8th Grade Mixed course. Emphasis
will be placed upon basic music theory, beginning sight singing, and basic
vocal technique. Music for this group will consist of light classical and
some contemporary and folk music. The singing of three-part music will be
a group goal. Choral performances are required for credit.

develop interests in illustration and design. Students may design, draw,

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This elective will expand music reading ability, as
well as keyboard and guitar playing skills. Students will continue to
gain an under-standing of MIDI technology in music by using a computer
with a sequenced program and a keyboard to make and record compositions.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is designed for those 8th grade students
who were enrolled in a 7th grade choral program. Students not meeting this
requirement may be admitted by instructor approval only. Emphasis will be
placed upon advanced sight singing and vocal technique. Music for this group
will consist primarily of classical concert pieces and some contemporary
pieces. The goals for this group are participation in a regional choral
festival and singing in four-part harmony. Choral performances are required
for credit.

cameras, design better photographs, print BLACK AND WHITE film, and use
their prints for display, to represent ideas, and to tell stories.

COURSE TITLE: Symphony
Band
PREREQUISITE: Previous study & ability to read music
LENGTH: Full year
COURSE DESCRIPTION: The student will participate in daily rehearsals and
in weekly lessons preparing for concerts. Students are also provided with
the opportunity to participate in solo and ensemble festivals and the jazz
band. Selected members will participate in area honor bands. A variety of
concert music from popular to the classical will be studied. An emphasis
is placed on sight-reading ability. Criteria is established for assignment
to concert band or symphonic band. Movement from one band to the other is
possible if the situation warrants.

COURSE TITLE: Symphony
Orchestra
PREREQUISITE: Previous study, consent of instructor
LENGTH: Full year
COURSE DESCRIPTION: The orchestra meets daily, with Symphony Orchestra composed
almost entirely of eighth graders. The group plays several required evening
concerts throughout the year. After the first concert, Symphony Orchestra
will devote three days per week to a string orchestra rehearsal and two
days in a full orchestra rehearsal. The performance of fine quality, well-written
literature played in an accurate musical style is a trademark of the group.
The students will also receive weekly lessons which focus on developing
their technique through the study of scales, etudes, and solo pieces.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: IB is the continuation of IA. Students learn in class
through teacher modeling, audio-visuals, role playing, oral and written
exercises and a textbook. Students acquire a basic vocabulary and can
talk and write about many topics in the present tense. More extended reading
is done in the language being studied. Students learn to use reference
tools and study independently for tests. Evaluation will be based on oral
participation, assignments and tests.

Students who complete this course may enroll in 2nd year of the foreign
language at high school level: French II, German II, Spanish II.

COURSE TITLE: Leadership

COURSE DESCRIPTION: A student interested in learning leadership skills
and practicing those skills should take this elective. The class will
meet every day for one trimester and is open to any student. Leadership
Seminar is a required course for the president and vice-president of the
South East Student Council, and students must take this course if they
want to be involved in the planning of school activities by working on
committees. Along with the regular course content, students in this class
will be responsible for participating in committees that will plan parties,
special assemblies, and community service projects.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Media Workshop offers students an opportunity to study
various aspects of media: advertising, radio, TV, video and print, with
an emphasis on oral and written communication skills. Students then apply
their knowledge in a workshop setting to create group projects in the
various media.

COURSE TITLE: Reading
Elective

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is designed for students who like to read
and who want time set aside in a busy day for reading. More than half the
class time will be spent reading books which students have chosen to read.
Students will be asked to read 150 pages per week and respond in writing
and discussion to the books they are reading. Each student will do an oral
presentation about a book/author of his/her choice. Students will have opportunities
to discover new titles and old favorites in the worlds of young adult, adult,
and classical fiction and non-fiction. Benefits include increasing fluency,
comprehension, vocabulary, and critical thinking skills, as well as having
time to read and use the library during the school day.

COURSE TITLE: Seminar
LENGTH: Every other day, all year
PREREQUISITE: Eligible students are those who have received a Core Total
score of 95th percentile or above on his/her most recent ITBS or a comparable
nationally normed achievement test, or who have two teacher recommendations.
Students will be notified by letter of their eligibility for this elective.
COURSE DESCRIPTION: Seminar is an elective course designed for gifted and
talented students who wish to challenge their own potential within a small
group. Students will develop individual skills in creative thinking, logic
and problem solving. Students will also be provided with opportunities for
career awareness and individual creative projects based on student interests
and abilities.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: World Events is a subject area that is developed as
events take place. Whether those events occur in the students' community,
or across the ocean, the course is designed to evaluate their significance.
Being a democratic course in nature, the students play a major part in choosing
which events to study. The role of the teacher is to guide them through
the study, often as the event takes place. The teacher may have to rely
upon other areas of social science study, such as history and global studies,
to help students fully comprehend the current significance of the events
they have chosen for study.

will study trends in nutrition and will learn to analyze food labels.
A variety of nutritional snacks and meals will be prepared throughout
the course. Students will learn that food that is good for your can also
taste good! These skills are enhanced by practicing altering recipes for
good health.

them to have a level of competency which will serve them well throughout

COURSE TITLE: Independent
Study
PREREQUISITE: None
COURSE DESCRIPTION: Independent study is a program in which students may
submit a proposal for an independent study project for credit. If the
proposal is approved by the principal and the student's committee, the
student will, upon successfully completing the project, receive a trimester's
credit. The student must obtain a faculty member to serve as his/her advisor.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: The volunteer program will provide the student with
training in the concepts of volunteer work. Students will be assigned work
sites (normally at SE) with a staff supervisor.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: The volunteer program will provide the student with
training in the concepts of volunteer work with Special Education students.
Students will be assigned work sites in a Special Education classroom. These
classrooms include an Autistic Classroom and a Self-Contained Classroom
for Moderately Mentally Disabled.
