COURSE DESCRIPTION: The purpose of seventh grade Global Studies is to
encourage the development of students' global perspectives. Emphasis is
on student involvement in increasing their awareness and understanding
of our growing ties to the rest of the world. The concept-focused curriculum
will give each student an opportunity to examine various cultures and
geographic characteristics of selected world areas. Inquiry lessons, role
playing simulation activities and skill exercises such as writing, reading
map skills, and listening are used to achieve the objectives of each unit.

COURSE TITLE: Language
Arts 7

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Language Arts 7 supports growth in students' literacy
by integrating activities in reading, writing, speaking, listening, visual
expression, and viewing. Activities are both teacher directed and student
selected, often including a workshop setting for reading and writing. A
Language Arts/Global Studies block allows teachers to team teach. In addition,
many of the literature selections in Language Arts 7 come from the areas
of the world studied in Global Studies.

COURSE TITLE: Literacy 7

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
The goal of this course is to help students learn strategies to become engaged, fluent, and competent readers of a variety of texts encountered in their personal and academic lives. Overtime students will learn about and practice using cognitive strategies to help them learn from a variety of increasing complex reading material.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is intended to establish and/or strengthen
students' understanding of mathematical concepts. Experiences with manipulatives,
where appropriate, will create clearer mental images to represent abstract
ideas. Students should be involved in activities which require the choice
of using estimation, mental computation, or paper/pencil to arrive at a
solution. Problem solving will be an integral part of the students' mathematical
experiences.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Pre-Algebra 7 is for those students who have already
demonstrated the ability to accurately compute with whole numbers, fractions
and decimals, and their problem solving skills are highly developed. This
is an accelerated math course which, upon successful completion, will prepare
the student for the study of algebra.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Algebra is considered the basic language of mathematics
that provides the foundation for continued study of mathematics. Students
will understand and use mathematical relationships to solve a variety of
problems related to the real world. Students will become familiar with using
graphing tools to visualize mathematical relationships. Purchase of a scientific
calculator by each student is strongly recommended.

the knowledge and concepts related to a wide variety of activities. A major
goal of this course is to develop the students' gross and fine motor coordination
through exposure to individual and team activities with low levels of competition.
Participation in class activities is emphasized to provide a positive experience.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Science 7 is a general science course concentrating
on topics in earth science. It is activity oriented with an emphasis on
laboratory investigations. Activities are designed to develop both science
skills and concepts. Content is reinforced in the textbook and made relevant
through the use of media.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This is a basic general music course designed to provide
each student with an increased knowledge of music and direct experiences
with music. Students are challenged to perceive the relationships between
all curricular areas and music. Students will be evaluated based upon their
individual growth in skills, attitudes, and knowledge.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Personal Development 7 is designed to assist students
with the transition from elementary school to junior high school. This
course will give the student information to formulate opinions and to
help make healthy decisions to implement in his/her life.

suicide prevention, self confidence, identity, decision making

that offers students a variety of art techniques and a study of art history.
Students are encouraged to think, be creative, share ideas, explore new
ideas and appreciate a variety of cultural diversity in art.

COURSE TITLE: Reading

LENGTH: One trimester
COURSE DESCRIPTION: This is a developmental program designed to increase
fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary skills and strategies and to encourage
students to use reading as a lifelong source of entertainment and information.
About 50% of class time is devoted to sustained silent reading. Students
write about and discuss what they have read. Students are introduced to
a wide range of young adult authors and have regular access to the library.
Oral interpretation skills are also practiced.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This exploratory course is designed to help each student
become more independent and to be a contributing member of a family. Emphasis
is placed on reading and following written directions, consideration of
the needs and feelings of others, and applying life skills that will help
students cope in today's world.

COURSE TITLE: Typing/Keyboarding
PREREQUISITE: None
LENGTH: One tri
COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is required for all 7th graders. In the
first half of the trimester, students learn basic fundamentals of alphabetic
and numeric keyboarding. Emphasis is placed on developing the touch method
of keyboarding and developing speed. The second half concentrates on formatting
skills. Students will be able to format announcements, tables, personal
notes, letters and reports. Equipment: MacIntosh computers. Software: Microsoft
Word.
AREAS OF STUDY:
Students will learn to find the keys on the keyboard by touch, without looking.
Carefully measured key introductions and daily practice ensures that all
students can type by touch at the course end.
Centering items both vertically and horizontally and typing material in
columns (tabulations) will be included.
Accuracy and speed will be emphasized so that the student(s) will be proficient
enough to continue to use good typing techniques throughout his/her school
years.
Various communication typing skills (letters, reports, etc.) will be included
along with composition on the computer.
