Fun! Exciting! I learned a lot!

These are just some of the things students are saying about the wide range of activities and clubs that Northwest Junior High makes available! Students are encouraged to participate. These clubs and activities are some of the most popular educational extensions the school has to offer! The clubs are sponsored and supervised by staff members and meet on a regular basis, sometimes during lunch and sometimes after school. Below is a sampling of the Clubs that are currently active at Northwest:

Art and Video Club

Art Club members will be involved in a variety of fun and interesting art activities throughout the year. This will be a time and place to work on artword with others who have a similar interest. We will create artwork together and individually. Art Club member will also help to display student artwork around the school and in artshows.

Workshop possibilities:

Cross Country

Cross Country is a club that meets August-October. Students in the club have the opportunity to workout up to three times a week and participate in cross country meets. Click here for the Cross Country Home page.

Drama Club

The Drama Club is sponsored jointly with the Coralville Recreation Center, City Circle Acting Company and Northwest Junior High. The club meets in the NW Theater each Wednesday from 3:30 to 4:30. Students in the drama club will work with members of the City Circle Acting Company on various aspects of acting. Leading the activity this year is James Trainor.

Geography Bee

The geography bee is open to all students. In the winter, a school-wide bee will held and the 7th and 8th grade winners will advance to regional competitions. Past winner Drew Coffin advanced to the finals in Washington DC two consecutive years. Sponsor: Steve Shullaw

Ecology Club

The Ecology Club is a group of students who have decided to devote time to learning about and taking action on environmental issues. Current club interests and activities include water quality monitoring of our local watershed, on-site prairie maintenance, promoting recycling programs at NW and in the larger community, maintaining a kestrel nestbox program, among other things. Sponsors: Dan Hill & Dan Mascal

Lego League

The members of the Lego League club will design, build, and program a Lego NXT robot to perform missions on a 4' by 8' game board. In addition to the robot competition, the teams present a research project to a team of judges. The theme for the 2008-2009 presentation and robot competition is "Climate Connections."

Knowledge Masters:

Middle school academic teams at nearly 1300 schools face their computers and 200 tough questions to vie for top scores based on the accuracy and speed of their answers. The Knowledge Master Open is designed to test both the recall ability and group work of junior high students. Students qualify for the club by participating in screening tests which take place in August and September. Dan Mascal is the KMO sponsor.

Sewing Club

Are you the next "American Designer"? Are you artistic? Creative?  Would you like to learn or improve your sewing skills?  The Sewing Club meets weekly on Mondays in Room 116 from 3:30 – 4:30.  Projects are your decisions.  Students have made: bags, purses, baby blankets, quillows, aprons, pillows, pants, dresses, crafts and one-of-a-kind items.  Many of the projects were personalized with NWJH's embroidery machines.  So please bring your ideas and project supplies (your fabric & sewing notions) and join us!  Current members rotate bringing snacks to share in the Foods Room prior to the start of club.  Sponsor: Kathy Hanes
