Philosophy
At Northwest we believe that althetics are an excellent way for young adults to learn key life skills such as discipline, teamwork, competition, and committment. We also believe that being out for a sport helps our students understand the importance of a healthy and active lifestyle. Northwest Junior High does not cut players from its sports teams. Players that consistently participate in practices will see playing time. Northwest also has a committment to have players of similar playing ability compete against each other. For this reason, when enough althletes go out for a sport, the players will be divided into various teams. This will allow player of like ability to compete with each other and lessen the chances that junior high athletics contests will become lopesided affairs.
Participation
To participate in athletics all athletes need the following turned in prior to their practicing:
- Physical form signed by physician
- Insurance information
- Emergency card, filled out by parent/guardian
- Training Rules/Good Conduct Acknowledgment form
- Permission to practice signed by parent/guardian
Game and Practice Schedules:
Game schedules are located on the team home page. Practice schedules will be distributed by coaches at the beginning of each season and posted on this website as they become available. Because of building security, students waiting for rides in the building after 3:30 p.m. are asked to wait inside the southwest gym entrance. Parents or others picking up students should wait at the far west end of the parking lot so they can be seen from inside the building. This is especially crucial when the weather is cold. Phones are available after practices and games in the coaches’ offices. A pay phone is located in the gym area. Students must pick up their possessions before going to practices or games as the main entrance to the hall locker area is closed at 3:30 p.m. for security reasons.
Athletic Study Hall
Athletes having late athletic practices (5:00-6:30) will be provided a place to study while waiting for practice. During the athletic study hall students will be expected to study.
This study hall is supervised by an educational associate from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Any athlete who is not in the athletic study hall must wait off grounds while waiting for late practices. Any athlete who is found in parts of the building other than the athletic study hall may be dropped from the squad.
Rules for Athletes
A student is considered an athlete the first day he/ she reports to an athletic squad. Training rules will be discussed by the athlete’s coach. Training procedures are in effect throughout the calendar year.
All athletes are bound by rules and regulations set forth in Administrative Policy 503.4C (See appendix).
Activity Tickets
Activity tickets for all West or City home athletic events may be purchased for $25.00 in the main office. Lost or stolen activity tickets will not be replaced.
Insurance
Accident insurance for all students will be available through the office. There are two plans available: “Schooltime” which covers students at school, going to and from a regular session of school, or participating in regular school activities. The other plan is a “24 hour” plan that covers a student anywhere for the entire year, including vacations. Forms are available in the office.
Attending High School Games
There are new rules for students attending high school football games at City High and West High. Elementary and junior high aged students are no longer allowed to be dropped off at these events unchaperoned. Students must be accompanied by parents and they must be seated. Elementary and junior high aged students will not be allowed to loiter around the stadium
