FRENCH 1A, GERMAN 1A OR SPANISH 1A

PREREQUISITE: None

GRADE LEVEL: 7

LENGTH: All Year (alternate days)

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
It is strongly recommend that students have GRADE LEVEL READING SKILLS and be willing to accept responsibility for daily written assignments for this course. This course is not designed for native speakers. This course is the equivilent of the first trimester of language at the high school level. The 1A course, which meets every other day, is presented and designed to maximize a student's understanding of basic, elementary French, German or Spanish (depending on which language the student chooses to study). Emphasis will be placed on speaking, reading, writing, listening and culture. A textbook, oral and written exercises, audio-visuals, and cultural readings are integrated essentials of the course. Progress will be measured using written and oral tests, homework, and class participation. Eighth graders who did not start a language in seventh grade will receive lowest priorty for being assigned to this class.

Note: 8th graders who take this class will be expected to register for the first level of the language at high school and repeat the information taught during the first trimester. The sequence requires both 1A and 1B at junior high for eligibility at the second year level in high school.

PREREQUISITE: Successful completion with a grade of C or higher in third trimester of 1A language class; Successful completion of placement test

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
It is strongly recommend that students have GRADE LEVEL READING SKILLS and be willing to accept responsibility for daily written assignments for this course. This course is not designed for native speakers. The 1B is a continuation of the 1A course. This course meets daily and is the equivilent of the second and third trimesters of language at the high school. Emphasis will be placed on speaking, listening, reading and writing, and culture. Students acquire a fundamental vocabulary, learn basic grammar and use basic structures of the chosen language. A textbook, workbook, written and oral exercises, tapes and visuals may be used in teaching the course. Homework will be assigned daily. Students will be expected to complete the assigned work on time. Good study habits are important, as this is a demanding course. Progress will be measured through written and oral tests, homework and class participation.

Upon successful completion of this course, a student may enroll in the second year of the chosen foreign language studied (French II, German II or Spanish II) at the high school level.
