FAMILY & CONSUMER SCIENCE I

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This action-packed exploratory course is designed to help teens prepare for independence and to be a contributing family member. Students will gain confidence with new survival skills that will help students cope as a new teen in today’s world. Hands-on opportunities include: cooking for fun and using recipes, using kitchen appliances and equipment, applying the new “My Pyramid” for healthy eating, entertaining children, preparing to baby-sit, sewing and embroidering projects with computerized machines, ironing and repairing clothes, learning to do laundry, and managing money, checkbooks, and a debit card.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This elective course builds on the Family & Consumer Science I course. Emphasis is placed on developing skills to help the students become more independent in the areas of foods/nutrition, sewing, consumer awareness/advertising, relationships. Each area uses hands-on activities to enhance the experience.

FOOD FOR FITNESS

PREREQUISITE: FCS I

GRADE LEVEL: 8

LENGTH: One Trimester

CATEGORY: Practical Arts Elective

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course emphasizes eating for good health with many hands-on-learning experiences. Students will study trends in snacks and nutrition (fat, salt, caffeine, sugar, fiber) and will analyze food labels. Students cook an average of 2-3 times per week. A variety of nutritional snacks and meals will be prepared throughout the trimester. (Students will learn, food that is good for them, can also taste good!) These skills are enhanced by practicing altering recipes for good health. Nutrition for sports and weight control are covered, as well as effects of advertising, eating disorders and dieting.

SEWING AND CLOTHING SELECTION PREREQUISITE: FCS I

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This elective offers students the opportunity to develop skills in sewing, fabric knowledge, pattern use and selection, wardrobe planning and shopping skills. The emphasis of the hands-on program is to use sewing skills and patterns to complete a variety of fun projects.
