COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This is an advanced course for students with good keyboarding skills who want to learn and work more with the computers and a variety of software. It is a course for those who will use personal computers for their academic and personal needs. It is also an excellent course for those who want to develop marketable employment skills. The software to be used includes:
Microsoft Word--for word processing
Microsoft Access--for database
Excel --for spreadsheet
PowerPoint--for presentation slides
Front Page--for designing web pages
Internet Explorer--for Internet use and e-mail
Microsoft Publisher--for desktop publishing
AREAS OF STUDY:
Students will develop the ten-key number pad skills to facilitate fast number entry by touch.
Students will learn database creation, manipulation and meaningful use, and they will complete several projects (reports and forms) in this unit including a major class database and then a personal use database. Pictures and design are included on database forms.
Students will learn spreadsheet creation, calculation, manipulation and meaningful use, as they complete projects for this unit. Charts and graphs from spread sheets are used.
Presentations will be developed using Power Point software, whereby each student will create a slide show using text, animation, graphics and photographs (camera and scanner).
Other software that becomes available for either single computer demonstration or as a class set for all computers will be utilized.
Students will access the Internet and utilize a free server to send and receive e-mail.
Students will create/design a web page using Front Page software if time permits.
Students will use Publisher software for desktop publishing if time permits.
EXPECTATIONS OF STUDENTS:
Come to class on time daily with recommended materials ( pen/pencil and a two-pocket folder).
Show respect for all other students and staff and assist one another when appropriate.
Be responsible for the proper handling and care of all equipment and furniture in the room.
Complete all assigned projects promptly and carefully.
Demonstrate a good understanding of the skills, computer operations, and purposes of all units and assignments.
No homework will be assigned, but absences may result in extra time being needed to make up in-class work.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This is a required course in which the computer keyboard is learned so that the student will be able to touch type (with covered keys) efficiently. Basic word processing skills are a daily part of this course taught on Omni-Tech Windows computers with Microsoft Office 2002 software.
AREAS OF STUDY:
Students will first learn/review the basic operation of the computers.
Students will learn to find the keys on the keyboard by touch, without looking, with proper reaches.
The keys are covered with colored dot labels so that letters cannot be seen.
Carefully measured key introduction and daily classwork ensures that all students type by touch with proper technique at the course end.
Centering items on a line and typing material in columns (tabulation) will be included.
Formatting features of the computer and software are learned and practiced in several
projects.
Accuracy and speed are emphasized so that the student will be proficient enough to continue to use good typing technique throughout his/her school years.
Some communication typing (letters, notes) is included.
At course end, students will be able to properly and successfully use the Omni-Tech Windows computer and Microsoft Word 2002 software program for their basic academic word processing needs.
Students will also use Publisher 2002 software for desktop publishing.
EXPECTATIONS OF STUDENTS:
Come to class on time daily. A two- pocket folder and pencil and pen are needed.
