General Music
Lemme's music program helps students understand, appreciate, and enjoy music and the role it can play in their lives. It also teaches students to work together. Kindergarten through third grade students meet for three 25 minute sessions a week. Grades four through six meet twice a week, and each class is 25 minutes. The primary grades learn how to use their singing voice, and how to use rhythm instruments and Orff instruments, including xylophones, the metalaphone, glockenspiels, and bass bars. The advanced grades learn to use the same things, only at a more advanced level. Some time during the year grades four, five, and six study various composers. All students study music from various cultures. They view videos about different cultures as well as explore the music and instruments of those cultures. Every other year the Lemme fifth and sixth graders prepare and perform a musical. They perform for the other Lemme students and staff in the morning and for their families in the evening. The last musical, The Granny Awards, was performed in March, 2000.
The musical has been a tradition at Lemme for more than a decade. The tradition has been continued because the productions give children an opportunity to develop their music skills, be responsible for themselves and cooperatively work in a group to meet group goals.
