	Identify potential sources of information
	Assess suitability of potential resources considering the time frame, scope, and range of the topic
	Examine possible sources, assessing which are most relevant

Locate the sources

	Construct and execute effective search strategies
	Identify and use various strategies or techniques when executing searches
	Search library catalog
	Locate materials on library shelves by call number
	Use print and electronic resources including reference sources, periodical indexing, abstracting and/or full-text sources, and the Internet
	Use community resources

Find information within sources

	Identify author, title, title page, illustrator, cover, spine, publisher, copyright date
	Use table of contents, index, and glossary
	Decode citations
	Navigate within sources to locate and access information
	Use print and electronic search and/or find features, including guide words, cross references, bookmarks

Scan, screen, and select appropriate resources

	Distinguish between fiction and nonfiction
	Determine authorship
	Examine information for bias, point of view, and intent
	Select appropriate resources from a list of “hits” obtained in an electronic search
	Apply evaluative criteria to determine the relative value of the information: relevancy, suitability, authority, objectivity, currency
	Identify information relevant and essential to the information need
