BENCHMARKS

Description of the Specific Level of Information, Skill and Performance by Level

Level I

Communication

  • Carry on a short conversation about personal interests including what they are doing and are going to do.
  • Ask and answer simple questions using practiced patterns.
  • State personal preferences and feelings.
  • Express agreement and disagreement using memorized expressions.
  • Read and respond to level appropriate written materials on familiar topics.
  • Comprehend the main idea of selected authentic materials.
  • Understand written and spoken language that has strong visual support.
  • Identify aural and visual clues within a limited context.
  • Begin to derive meaning using cognates, context and classroom experience.
  • Present songs, short poems or dialogs on familiar topics.
  • Write and present short narratives on familiar topics.
  • Write short guided compositions on familiar topics.

Cultures

  • Observe and imitate patterns of behavior such as greetings, gestures and common interactions.
  • Identify some common beliefs and attitudes within the cultures studied.
